Children’s Mental Health Week
Sept. 10, 2007
The Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation is again supporting the work of the Coalition for Children’s Mental Health in a variety of ways, including sponsoring an informative panel discussion on Monday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. at Hudson High School’s Media Center.
The forum focuses on “Signs and Symptoms: The Importance of Early Intervention.” Panelists will include Dr. Georgette Constantinou from Akron Children’s Hospital, Thom Craig from the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation, Dr. Robin Tener from Northeast Ohio Behavioral Health and a representative from Hudson City Schools.
Each panelist will present his or her thoughts about the topic and then take questions. Anyone wishing to submit a question in advance can call Marie Yeh at the Coalition at 234-380-9061, or e-mail the question to marieyeh@roadrunner.com.
The Coalition for Children’s Mental Health began Children’s Mental Health Week eight years ago to help draw attention to the mental health issues children face. Serious emotional and mental disorders in children are real, affecting one in every five young people at any given time, with one in ten suffering from severe emotional disturbance.
The Coalition will again recognize those who have made a difference in the well-being of our children with the Community Heroes Awards. Past winners have run the gamut of occupations from bus driver to community psychologist. Nominations are due Sept. 15 and can be submitted online at www.hudsonccmh.org.
Children in grades 4-12 are invited to submit a poster depicting this year’s “Find a Way…” theme. “We sponsor the contest as a way to get kids to think about mental health and develop a positive message for others,” said Mary Bradley, chair of the Coalition’s Board and Poster Contest Committee.
Submissions should portray a positive visual and verbal message about mental health, measure about 11x17 inches and contain the words “Children’s Mental Health Week, October 14-20, 2007.” Posters can be submitted to most school’s art teacher or school office, or they can be mailed to Mary Bradley directly. Deadline for entry in Sept. 28. Call Ms. Bradley for more information at 330-342-4994.
Community Heroes and Poster Contest winners will be honored at the pinnacle event of Children’s Mental Health Week, the Coalition’s Award Banquet. This year’s banquet will be Thursday, Oct. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hudson Holiday Inn.
Dr. Penny Frese, Hudson resident who is a nationally renowned speaker and advocate in mental health will speak. Tickets are $20, and everyone is welcome to attend. Call Joyce Sutterer for additional information at 330-655-2006.
